| In
their distinctive ways, both Sunn o))) and Boris have charted a course through
the murky waters of subterranean metal and noise in recent years unparalleled
in impact by any other acts; individually responsible for some of the most
monstrously alien music Southern Lord has ever released, the prospect of
a collaboration between these two behemoths should have fans of extreme
music all over the world salivating with anticipation. Both acts have developed
from obscure avant-metal beginnings to obtain sweeping critical acclaim
in their abilities to challenge the very categories of metal and noise,
with Sunn O)))'s legendary slo-mo feedback symphonies offering a genuinely
innovative take on Satanic schlock, while Boris? kaleidoscopic bursts of
bruised colour provide a more hectic approach to contemporary heavy music.
Collectively, this pairing could hardly fail, and on "Altar", their first collaboration, they serve up a wholly unique album that alchemically merges familiar elements of each band's sound into a transfigured, mysterious whole; roaring drones rise and collapse beneath blasts of disorienting, warped horns, the end result a heaving, psychedelic mass that looks set to induct yet more devotees to the shadowy explorations of both acts. |
