SOFA
Sofa was a band from 1993 to 1997. Born out of quiet desperation and romantic naiveté, the four founding members stuck together for the duration, devoting themselves to the sonic transmission of discomfort, confusion and loss, picking up the odd sympathetic listener along the way. Mostly Sofa wrote songs in a 10' x 10' room, playing and then discarding them every few months, after a sullen gig or two. Bitterness and defiance competed with self-doubt and resignation in an interminable circular movement. You had to laugh, which Sofa often did, in alternately sinister and self-deprecating fashion, behind the closed door of the rehearsal space.
Oh the good times they had, lapping up the rare kind word like submissive dogs before retreating again into resentment, embarrassment and despair. And throughout this long history of falling on deaf ears, Brad and Scott played the valiant archivists, saving every piece of band-related arcania to look back on misty-eyed and bilious as it all fades to black.

Ian and Keith lacked the encyclopaedic instinct, but they all cherish the times now spent getting drunk together, poring over scrapbooks thoroughly annotated and exquisitely maintained, circling into a disappearing solipsistic mythology.
