resident Scott Morgan records and performs under the name Locsil, using
sampler, synths, fx, and a dose of computer programming. The album Triple
Point (first release) is based on the concepts of thermodynamics, the physical
science which investigates the conversion of heat into mechanical force
or energy and vice versa. If this music was released as a series of white
sleeved 12"s or as a CD in an opaque plastic wrapper and came in packages
post marked Germany, the wires would be buzzing as the tastemakers scrambled
to discover who Locsil is. With the growing recognition of North American
sound arrangers, like Matmos, Kit Clayton, Solvent and other, point of origin
shouldn't be an issue. The fluctuating tones and pulses of Triple Point
create texture, melodic sense and rhythms that give the listener ample reward. |
Submers is the second album from the Vancouver-based Scott Morgan aka loscil. All of the tracks are named after submarines, the final cut being a requiem for the crew of the ill fated Russian nuclear vessel Kursk. Recorded at home on computer with samples and keyboards used as sound sources, Submers is rife with source less echoes, steely surfaces and ominous melodic and rhythmic undertows. The sifted melodies are layered over muffled, clicking and pulsing rhythm tracks with an appropriately aquatic feel to the entire album. |
