| GIRLS
AGAINST BOYS started back in 1988 at a small basement studio just outside
Washington, DC. Brendan Canty and Eli Janney were shut down in the dark,
stirring up mean concoctions of noise and music. They finish three songs.
They call in their friend Scott McCloud to sing. They call the project GIRLS
AGAINST BOYS to fuck with the "boys club" mentality of the punk
scene at the time. Two years later Scott and Eli begin again, but this time Brendan is busy with his band FUGAZI, so the two enlist bassist Johnny Temple and drummer Alexis Fleisig. They finish three songs. the fruit of this two-year labor is released as a six-song vinyl only ep called 90's vs. 80's. At the same time Scott, Johnny and Alexis were playing in Soul Side, a veteran Dischord band with three albums out. But the heavy touring Soul Side had been doing took its toll and Soul Side broke up in the same year that 80's vs. 90's was released. In 1991 the four came together again, this time to turn the GVSB project into a band. They began recording their first full-length album, Tropic of Scorpio in December of 1991. Jeff Nelson, co-owner of Dischord records, released the album on his Adult Swim label, along with all formats of the previous ep in the spring of 1992. GIRLS AGAINST BOYS went on their first tour as a band that summer, covering the entire USA and all of Europe. During the US tour, GVSB played in Chicago before some people from TOUCH AND GO records; and spoke to them about the label and a possible union of efforts. |
This
led to a meeting with Corey Rusk, the owner of TOUCH AND GO who invited
them to join the label in the fall of 1992. GVSB began recording their
2nd album, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby in the winter of 1993, this time enlisting
the help of producer Ted Niceley. Bullet
Proof Cupid, put out in spring 1993, was the first single released from
that session and was the first GVSB record on TOUCH AND GO. The album,
Venus Lux was released in August 1993. After the release of Venus Lux
GVSB went on an extensive tour of the US and Europe, playing with such
bands as The Jesus Lizard, Tar, Jawbox, and Brainiac. While on tour in
the UK, GVSB recorded two tracks with John Loder at Southern Studios in
London. These two gems were released in the spring of 1994 as the Sexy
Sam single. The CD version contained one song from each of their earlier
releases and a sixth "secret" track. |
