| 'Fake
French,' El Guapo's second Dischord release, brings brash art-punk to the
post-millennial dance floor. Largely self-recorded in numerous sessions
over six months, the album elicits comparisons to groundbreakers Devo, Suicide,
Kraftwerk, and Gang of Four as well as genre-busters Afrika Bambaatta, the
Stooges, Tom Waits, and Run-DMC. From the dark electro anthem "Just
Don't Know" to the B-boy-esque vocal exchange of "Glass House,"
the New York/Washington DC trio herein crystallizes its singular take on
pop music.
After crafting an explosive live set in over 100 Stateside and European shows in 2002 (including tours with Trans Am, Adult, and Q and Not U as well as shows with the Faint, the Dismemberment Plan the Black Heart Procession, Go-Go-Go Airheart, Milemarker, Kill Me Tomorrow, Enon, Hella, and the 90-Day Men), El Guapo has plans for another US tour in spring 2003. Justin Moyer (drums) plays guitar in Antelope, a post-punk trio with an upcoming split Dischord release, while Peter Cafarella (keyboards) has recorded with the Rapture and continues to tour with his synth duo Shychild. El Guapo have recently finished a European tour. Look for El Guapo and 'Fake French' in a city near you soon.
